Needs for Francophone Economic Immigration Well Represented at Immigration Summit

Halifax, October 28, 2015 – The Conseil de développement économique de la Nouvelle-Écosse (CDÉNÉ) participated in the Immigration Summit organized by the government of Nova Scotia’s Office of Immigration on October 26, 2015.
The Summit was the last of a series of eight consultations led by the Minister of Immigration, the Honorable Lena Metlege Diab, to identify issues and opportunities related to immigration in Nova Scotia. It brought together over 150 representatives of the private and institutional sectors, various levels of government, post-secondary establishments and community leaders to Pier 21 in Halifax to talk about immigration.
“Major events such as the Immigration Summit are opportunities for the CDÉNÉ to shed light on the contribution and potential of Francophone economic immigration to Nova Scotia with political decision-makers and representatives of municipal, provincial and federal governments,” explained executive director Julie Oliver. “The CDÉNÉ is happy to have been able to discuss matters with the province’s Minister of Immigration and a representative of Premier McNeil’s advisory committee on immigration.”
The CDÉNÉ has been active in the area of Francophone economic immigration to Nova Scotia since 2005. Its interventions target the elements in the action plan developed by the coalition One Nova Scotia based on the Ivany Report:
- “Improve International Qualifications Recognition (IQR)” - The CDÉNÉ is working with representatives of provincial Departments and with the professional orders and associations to facilitate access, in French, to the international qualifications recognition process;
- “Ensure international graduates have opportunities to choose Nova Scotia” – The CDÉNÉ is collaborating with Université Sainte-Anne to identify means to take advantage of the huge potential represented by international students as future residents of Nova Scotia;
- “Welcome and support immigrants” - In collaboration with many government, institutional and community partners, such as Immigration francophone Nouvelle-Écosse and Université Sainte-Anne, the CDÉNÉ is working to ensure the harmonious economic integration of newcomers who choose to settle in Nova Scotia.
The CDÉNÉ wishes to thank Citizenship and Immigration Canada and the Nova Scotia Office of Immigration for funding its Francophone economic immigration projects.
